The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (), Kumasi has graduated the first cohort of postgraduate students from its Department of Petroleum Engineering.
Of the 12 students who enrolled in the MSc Petroleum Engineering programme in 2024, 11 completed the one-year course, yielding a 92% graduation rate. University officials cited the result as a reflection of student commitment and faculty support.
The department now offers a full range of postgraduate programmes, including MSc, MPhil, and PhD degrees. It supports both teaching and research through six petroleum laboratories, valued collectively at over USD 12 million. These facilities are among the most advanced in the region and are used for academic training and applied research.
The department plans to expand its offerings to provide technical services to Ghana’s oil and gas sector, university officials said.
In addition to infrastructure, the department maintains partnerships with industry and academic institutions both locally and internationally. These collaborations aim to align training with current trends and ensure relevance in global petroleum research and practice.
“Our graduation is a collective achievement and a testament to what rigorous academic support can accomplish,” said Dr. Yen Adams Sokama-Neuyam, Head of Department. He acknowledged faculty contributions, with particular mention of Dr. Kwame Sarkodie, senior lecturer and postgraduate programmes coordinator, for his role in programme delivery.
The MSc Petroleum Engineering programme is structured to accommodate offshore workers and international students, offering flexibility in participation and completion.
Currently, 26 students are enrolled in the MSc programme. Applications for the 2025/2026 academic year are open, with strong competition expected, according to the department.
