When Mugisha Yvonne, a determined Rwandan student, missed her chance to study Pharmacy at her preferred university, she thought her dream was over. But fate had other plans. Through theMastercard Foundation Scholars ProgramatKwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (), Kumasi she found not just an alternative but an institution that has exceeded her expectations.
Yvonne, now a third-year Pharmacy student, initially hoped to attend theUniversity of Rwanda. However, when she was offered an Advanced Diploma instead of her desired Pharmacy degree, she refused to settle.
A friend’s recommendation led her to , where she applied for both the university and the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, a decision that changed her academic trajectory. “I wanted to do Pharmacy, and gave me that opportunity. The Mastercard Foundation’s support made it possible,”she shared.
Since arriving at , Yvonne has been impressed by the university’sstructured academic system,well-equipped labs, andexceptional lecturers. “ is a nice school. The academic calendar is well-organized, helping us plan effectively. The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences provides all the necessary materials for labs, and the lecturers are exceptional,”she remarked.
She emphasized that the program is designed to producehighly competent professionals, but students must take initiative.“Serious students can take full advantage and become the best in their field,”she added.
